Sunset
How could I not cry
When the sun sinks below the ocean
Casting deep velvet hues
Like tortured brushstrokes across the sky?
Is it my love, bled red upon the world's edge?
Or purple petals of blossoms crushed--
My flowers, an apology refused and thrown to the wind?
What do you expect of me
When the day melts to dusk
Like Sandy waters through my fingers,
Leaving only the salty sting of dying sunlight?
How could I not rue
Watching it creep across my floor,
Waiting too long to bask in its warmth?
My golden hope engulfed in black waters.
Now, as I watch night slowly waltz
Slower across the ever deepening, darkening sky,
Leaving star silver tears in its silken fabric,
I wonder if the dawn will bring you back,
Or if each dawn hence will bring only empty dewdrops to my eyes.
